Unleashing Potential (UP) is set to embark on its second cardboard boat regatta on Saturday, July 26, 2024 from 11AM-1PM at the O’Fallon Park Rec Plex located at 4343 W Florissant Ave., St. Louis, MO 63115. This community-focused event will bring together UP’s summer enrichment camp students (8 – 13 years old) with community partners, mentors, and high-quality educators to collaborate on cardboard boat engineering and design that will culminate in a boat race.
This event will enhance each student’s STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics) skills. The Cardboard Regatta is the only regatta held in the community where our students live.
Darlene Sowell, President & CEO of Unleashing Potential, stated, “Summer Road Trip, the theme for our summer camp this year, is woven into the cardboard boat build. Students will learn about geography and geospatial navigation, not just on the roadways, but the water ways too. By building cardboard boats, our scholars are also learning and practicing teamwork, leadership and collaboration. Unleashing Potential programs are designed to ensure children discover their interests and develop the skills necessary to be successful at home, in the classroom and their community.”
The regatta will include student and adult teams (Youth 8-13 and Adults 18+). Six prizes will be awarded.
Prizes include:
• Fastest Elapsed Time (separate for kid and adult categories)
• Fastest sinking “Titanic”
• Most team spirit – Kid category
• “Allure of the Sea” – best design/engineering
• “Best Bedecked” – best looking boat, most creative
• People’s Choice – (Pay $1 to vote for your favorite!)
The boats will be created during summer camp with guidance from community mentors that have a STEAM background. Students and Sponsors will get free cardboard, duct tape, and paint supplies. In addition to the race, the event will include outdoor summer activities, T-shirts, and concessions. News anchor, Cory Stark from KMOV/Channel 4, will serve as the live emcee. Individuals/Community group registration is $50 per boat and corporate (non-sponsor) boat registration is $250 (supplies not included). Spectators can attend for free.
