This annual September festival began in 1961 in response to an epidemic of Dutch elm disease. Residents were encouraged to plant trees to replace those being lost with trees sold at the fair for $1. Today many of those trees are mature and grace the lawns and streets of Kirkwood. The festival features food, games, information booths, a dog show, a canine frisbee competition, a parade, a wine garden, a book fair; folklife artisans, a classic car show, a sailboat regatta, and live entertainment.

The Greentree Festival is a pedestrian festival. We kindly ask that you refrain from using bicycles or rollerblades in the park for the safety of all. We love dogs, but dogs don’t always love crowds or loud noises. Please keep your pets and other festival goers safe by leaving your dogs at home, except for service animals and for those dogs entered in the Friday night Kids' Dog Show and Friskies Canine Frisbee competition.

The parade steps off at 10:00 a.m., Saturday morning. The parade begins at Kirkwood High School, goes east on Essex to Kirkwood Rd., south on Kirkwood Rd. to Argonne, west on Argonne, and ends at the Kirkwood Community Center.
