Why sensory play? Sensory play is open-ended, meaning there is no clearly defined outcome of playing with or exploring the materials given. The most meaningful part of sensory play is that it provides opportunities for children to actively use their senses as they explore their world. These types of activities are crucial to brain development and help to build nerve connections in the brain’s pathways.
These connections lead to a child’s ability to complete more complex learning tasks and supports cognitive growth, language development, gross motor skills, social interaction, self control and problem solving skills. A sensory bin is not about keeping kids busy, although it often does. Sensory bins provide opportunities for children to be successful, regardless of their language or cognitive abilities.
When the materials inside sensory bins are offered to children without an expectation of a finished product, children are free to use their imaginations and creativity to make sense of the materials provided.
