The Civil Air Patrol is an auxiliary of the US Air Force. The Cadet program is for ages 12-18. The cadets learn character, leadership, aerospace education, physical training and more while working their way through military ranks.
Cadets attend once weekly meetings and once per month a weekend or other evening activity (these may be volunteer opportunities, visits to museums, special events, team building, learning opportunities, etc). Some online time at home for learning and testing associated with earning rank promotions to be done at your own pace (approximately one chapter with a test each month).
There are other opportunities to attend a week long encampment (like boot camp) or other weekend or week long special activities on a variety of topics anywhere around the nation if desired. Topics for additional online learning or events may be on things like rocketry, aviation, leadership, emergency services, search and rescue, drone flying, cyber security, officer training, color guard, communications, etc. Cadets are also eligible for 5 free orientation flights where they can take control and pilot a Cessna with a certified CAP pilot while learning some flight basics.
How to Join:
CAP requires you to attend 3 meetings before you are eligible to join so that you can make sure it's right for you. You are welcome to visit us any week you'd like and don't need to RSVP ahead of time, but feel free to contact us if you prefer or have questions. While you are visiting you are welcome to just observe, or to join in as much as you are comfortable with. Parents should plan to stay in the meeting or on property while their cadet is visiting. Once you have joined cadets may be dropped off, but we also welcome parents to stay anytime.
