STEAM FOR SCHOOL GROUPS
STEAM at Laumeier sparks learners’ imagination and helps them become more innovative, multi-disciplinary thinkers through their exploration of sculptures, nature, and hands-on challenges.
The concept for this program was developed in 2022 in partnership with Maryville University’s STEM faculty. The STEAM at Laumeier curriculum is designed to support grade learning objectives. The program meets both Missouri and National learning standards.
Partial and full funding is available on a sliding scale to eligible third, fourth, and fifth grade classes. Funding eligibility is determined by the percentage of the school’s learners eligible for free or reduced lunch.
Field Trips / Grades K-8
Led by Laumeier’s STEAM Team, students investigate selected contemporary sculptures across the Park’s 94 acres of woodlands, trails and green space. At each stop, learners are guided through activities that help them learn how to creatively approach science, technology, arts, engineering, and math challenges.*
INTERACTIVE SCULPTURE TOUR + TAKE-HOME PROJECT / GRADES 3-5
3 Hours at Laumeier Sculpture Park
$25/Learner; Free for Chaperones
Mondays, Fridays / 10 a.m.–1 p.m.
Wednesdays / 11 a.m.–2 p.m.
*After a sack lunch and movement break, learners head to the outdoor education labs to construct a fun take-home project
Grades 3-5: Exploring Shapes & Building Structures
G3 / Third grade learners explore composition through their exploration of sculptures featuring 2D shapes that can be combined or divided. Each learner will have the opportunity to design, construct and reflect on their own shape-filled compositions to take home.
G4 / Fourth grade learners practice guided inquiry and estimation as they investigate sculptures that feature repeating monochromatic geometric shapes. Each learner will have the opportunity to design, build, and measure their own wire and wood sculpture to take home.
G5 / Fifth grade learners investigate functional and nonfunctional sculptures as they explore shapes, angles, and measurement along the woodland trails. Putting their imaginations to work, they then build their own unique structures through trial and error. Each learner will receive a structure building kit to take home.
