CLASS DESCRIPTIONS
Pottery for Beginners
In Pottery we will be using air dry clay. The students will be taught how to make a vessel using pinch, coil, slab, or score and weld techniques. On the second day we will be able to decorate our work with paint and adhere to structural elements. Clear coat will be applied by staff once the sculpture is dried. If you would like to add personal elements, please bring those.
Drawing
Drawing will focus on foundational concepts and practices by teaching how to translate 3d objects onto a 2d piece of paper. We will work on understanding shape, light, shadow, texture, mark making, and spatial relationships. Students will be drawing a black and white still-life study with a one-point light source the first day. The class will begin with the instructor demonstrating how to simplify forms and create shadows. After the demo an instructor will be walking around the room assisting students as needed. On the second day students will be drawing a still-life study of their choice in color. Please bring whatever drawing supplies they have plus a few important things to draw. I want these kids to leave more knowledgeable and excited to create new art.
Art History
An art history presentation will be given accompanied by a post open platform-Q and A. The art history presentation will be introducing major art movements, and the greats that we all know and love. Famous works such as Picasso’s blue period will be explored to show what makes the paintings so visually striking and how emotions are conveyed. The students will have to deliberate why they do or don’t like certain art works and speak to their interpretations.
Flip Book
Flip book animation is known as stop-motion animated sequences. We will be looking at the artist Andy Bailey of Andymation and all of the fun he creates. Everyone will get a booklet where they will create a character doing action sequences over 25-50 pages. By turning the pages quickly, we will be able to watch our characters come to life.
Faux Stained Glass
In Faux Stained Glass we will be making 8x10 panels using assorted materials and an enclosed frame. Students will be working on this 7th century inspired project by applying their newly acquired design knowledge. Tangrams like shapes will challenge these young artists to think differently a
