Preserving and Presenting the Heritage of Carondelet

The Carondelet Historical Society

was organized in 1967 as a 501(c)(3) corporation by a group of residents and civic leaders in the Carondelet area. We are located in the historic Des Peres School, established in 1873 & listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1981.

The site of the first public kindergarten in the United States. First year enrollment at the school included 42 students. The room has been refurbished to look exactly as it did in 1876 and contains some of Froebel's early "Gifts of Occupation."

The museum includes a "Heritage Room" featuring domestic furnishings from the 19th to early 20th centuries, a "Memory Lane Room" featuring toys, tools, and consumer goods, and many more smaller exhibits throughout he building.

Our organization is dedicated to perpetuating the heritage of our unique community: Carondelet, Missouri, formerly an independent village, town and city and now a neighborhood of St. Louis.

Our building and museum is located in Des Peres School, founded in 1873 and as the first publicly funded Kindergarten in the United States. It is also home of the Fred Bouchein Research Library, one of the finest historical libraries and archives in the region.

Be sure to visit our "Events" page to view a calendar of upcoming events, presentations, meetings and open houses.
